Rape culture is an environment in which rape is pervasive and normalised due to societal attitudes about gender and sexuality. Behaviors commonly associated with rape culture include victim blaming, slut shaming, sexual objectification, or some combination of these. This is also perpetuated through the use of misogynistic language, the objectification of women’s bodies, and the glamorization of sexual violence, thereby creating a society that disregards women’s rights and safety.
The normalisation of these behaviors have been dated back to the dance music scene’s earliest incarnation in the late 1980s and is the exact belief system and culture we are attempting to challenge and eventually change to create equality.
The following Music & Nightlife Rape Culture Pyramid has been supplied from Good Night Out Vancouver which was adapted from the 11th Principal Consent original Rape Culture Pyramid.
